Charkiw ist nach Kiew mit rund 1,5 Millionen Einwohnern die zweitgrößte Stadt der Ukraine. Mit 42 Universitäten und Hochschulen ist sie das nach Kiew bedeutendste Wissenschafts- und Bildungszentrum des Landes.
Die Stadt liegt im Nordosten der Ukraine an der Mündung des Flusses Charkiw in den Lopan und des Lopan in den Udy. Sie ist ein Industriezentrum (Elektro-, Nahrungsmittel-, chemische Industrie; Maschinen- und Schienenfahrzeugbau), mit sechs Theatern und sechs Museen ein kulturelles Zentrum und ein bedeutender VerkehrsknotenpunktPersönliche Situation
„Charkiw war eine wundervolle Stadt, es war wirklich schön dort und die Menschen in der Stadt waren im Grunde genommen sehr zufrieden. Alles entwickelte sich in die richtige Richtung. Die Stadt bot eine schöne Infrastruktur und ich persönlich war sehr glücklich und zufrieden mit meinem Leben vor Ort, in der schönen Stadt Charkiw. Charkiw liegt im Osten der Ukraine und dort spricht die Mehrheit der Menschen russisch, aber es war nie ein Problem, ukrainisch zu sprechen. Wir hatten mit dem ehemaligen Bürgermeister der Stadt, Hennadij Kernes, einen Bürgermeister, der die Stadt wirklich geliebt hat und viel für die Menschen auf den Weg brachte. Er verstarb im letzten Jahr und es wird vermutet, dass er getötet wurde, auch wenn sich die offizielle Version anders liest. Er hat viel Geld in die Infrastruktur und Arbeitsplätze gesteckt, ließ Gebäude renovieren und restaurieren, hat in Bildung investiert und war bei vielen Menschen in Charkiw sehr angesehen. Zu jener Zeit, insbesondere vor und um 2014, war mein Leben sehr schön, nahezu perfekt. Nach dem Tod Kernes hat sich die Lage aber insgesamt drastisch verändert. Ihor Terechow, der das Bürgermeisteramt von Charkiw übernahm, hatte aber keine Chance, seinen Stempel aufzudrücken und sich zu beweisen, da der Krieg vor der Tür stand. Meine Tochter hatte in Charkiw einen Friseursalon, in welchem ich als Buchhalterin arbeitete. Alles lief damals wirklich ausgezeichnet. Wir waren sehr zufrieden.“
Zur Kriegssituation

Wir konnten uns nicht vorstellen, dass wir beschossen werden und dachten, dass es lediglich eine Provokation sei und dass das einfach nicht wahr sein kann. Schließlich sind wir ein Bruder- und Schwesternvolk gewesen. Wir konnten es einfach nicht glauben. Es war ein unbeschreibliches Gefühl der Angst. Aber Putin will die Sowjetunion zurück. Spätestens durch Selenskyj waren wir Menschen in der Ukraine aber sehr europaorientiert und das war Putin ein Dorn im Auge. Für mich ist das der Kern des Konflikts. Der Weg in die EU wurde als Möglichkeit zu einem besseren Leben betrachtet. Charkiw liegt nah an der Grenze zu Russland und ich habe in Russland auch viele Verwandte. Und es ist traurig, dass sich das Verhältnis zu meinen russischen Verwandten durch den Einfluss der russischen Medienlandschaft so sehr verändert hat. Sie bekommen andere Informationen als wir in der Ukraine und unser Verhältnis hat sich tiefgreifend verschlechtert.“
Wünsche
„Ich wünsche mir, dass die Ukraine wiederauflebt und erblüht und ich bin den europäischen Ländern und Deutschland für ihre Hilfe dankbar, denn es ist nicht selbstverständlich, zu helfen. Wirklich! Ich glaube auch, dass alles wieder gut wird.“

Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine after Kiev with a population of about 1.5 million. With 42 universities and colleges it is the most important scientific and educational center of the country after Kiev.
The city is located in the northeast of Ukraine at the mouth of the Kharkiv River. It is an industrial center, a cultural center with six theaters and six museums, and an important transportation hub.Personal situation
"Kharkiv was a wonderful city, it was really nice there and people in the city were basically very happy. Everything was developing in the right direction. The city offered a nice infrastructure and I personally was very happy and satisfied with my life on the ground, in the beautiful city of Kharkiv. Kharkiv is located in the east of Ukraine and there the majority of people speak Russian, but it was never a problem to speak Ukrainian. We had a mayor in the former mayor of the city, Hennadij Kernes, who really loved the city and got a lot going for the people. He passed away last year and it is believed that he was killed, although the official version reads differently. He put a lot of money into infrastructure and jobs, had buildings renovated and restored, invested in education and was well respected by many people in Kharkiv. At that time, especially before and around 2014, my life was very beautiful, almost perfect. However, after Kern's death, the overall situation changed drastically. However, Ihor Terekhov, who took over the mayoralty of Kharkiv, had no chance to make his mark and prove himself, as the war was just around the corner. My daughter had a hairdressing salon in Kharkiv, in which I worked as a bookkeeper. Everything was going really excellently at that time. We were very satisfied."
On the war situation
"My husband finally called me at work when the conflict came to a head, and suddenly we found ourselves at war. We couldn't imagine that we were being shelled and thought that it was just a provocation and that it just couldn't be true. After all, we had been a brother and sister nation. We just couldn't believe it. It was an indescribable feeling of fear. But Putin wants the Soviet Union back. But at the latest through Selenskyj, we people in Ukraine were very Europe-oriented and that was a thorn in Putin's side. For me, this is the core of the conflict. Going to the EU was seen as a way to a better life. Kharkiv is close to the border with Russia and I have many relatives in Russia as well. And it is sad that the relationship with my Russian relatives has changed so much because of the influence of the Russian media. They get different information than we do in Ukraine and our relationship has deteriorated profoundly."
Wishes
"I wish for Ukraine to revive and blossom and I am grateful to the European countries and Germany for their help, because it is not natural to help. Really! I also believe that everything will be fine again."
